Sertão Negro Ateliê e Escola de Arte
Goiânia, Brazil
Conceived by visual artist Dalton Paula and Ceiça Ferreira, the Sertão Negro Ateliê e Escola de Artes was established in April 2021 and is located in the Shangry-lá neighborhood, in the Northern Region of Goiânia. The Sertão Negro aims to be a quilombo, an artistic-cultural space for experiences and exchanges with the environment.
The space is involved in training resident artists and assistants, as well as serving for research, discussions, national and international residencies, exhibitions, and classes in ceramics, printmaking, and capoeira. It also hosts the Cineclube Maria Grampinho, an activity that reinforces the educational and pedagogical aspects of the project.
Built in an ecologically sustainable manner, with water collection from reservoirs and preservation of native fauna and flora, Sertão Negro features a collective studio with a library of over two thousand books; a private mezzanine; and a hut for educational activities (such as capoeira, printmaking, and ceramics), all surrounded by cerrado trees, medicinal plants, flowers, and two fish ponds.
In just two years, the space has gained prominence in the artistic scene of Brazil's Midwest, serving as a bridge for exchanges not only internally but also with the broader Goiânia community and various art market agents, including national and international artists, curators, gallery owners, and collectors.
Although it is not primarily a gallery, the artists who study and work in the space engage with the art market authentically, valuing their individuality within a dynamic oriented towards collectivity.
