oEbanista - Ricardo Graham Ferreira
Nova Friburgo, Brazil
Wood, the main raw material used in his works, earns respect as a living and constantly changing character in the hands of Ricardo Graham Ferreira. In his workshop, located in Serra Fluminense, Ricardo works the material intuitively on his inspirations.
The choice of Ebanesteria came from Ricardo's passion for wood and its infinite possibilities. Respect for the material and the pleasure of bringing your drawings to life with your own hands are undoubtedly your greatest satisfaction as an ebanist. “My work's signature is often found where there is greater interaction between hands and wood”.
“Wood is, in itself, a sustainable and regenerating material. It adapts over time, bears marks of its existence and is eternal when well cared for. I want the pieces I create to be like the wood that received them: permanent, that they are part of the lives of different generations and that they take the story of each person with them over time,” says Ricardo.
The excellence of Ricardo's work crosses the material and arrives in drawing, through manual practice, always in an intuitive way. This entire cycle is present without its routine, experienced daily by Ricardo and his family - who live a few meters from the workshop in which he works -, through renewable and sustainable processes, which imprint a real freshness in a world saturated by the urgency of virtual time . “Manual work is really something very special in the sense that you can transport to what you are doing something very intimate, more intimate than thoughts. It is a direct relationship between vision and action without interference from thought and mechanicity”.
His unique design, shaped by the intuition and repertoire he conquered during the years of his career, makes Ricardo a spontaneous artist, where technique does not mold him, but serves as a guide to express his creativity. “It is in my expression that I find the originality in my work: this one had no school. That's where I employ a more intimate knowledge, where individuality takes shape: curves, wood tones, fittings. It is a language, a communication in the form of an object, an impulse that I seek to transmit through the pieces ”, he explains.
