Key part of SP-Foto program, Talks offered encounters between curators, gallerists, artists and collectors, reflecting upon trends in the photographic field and sharing practices and researches around this artistic language. In the 13th edition of the São Paulo Photography Fair, four panels took place on Thursday and Friday afternoon, 22nd and 23rd of August, during the event.

Meet the Artists, program dedicated to the exchange of experiences with important photographers from the contemporary scene, came back in 2019 with distinguished names from current Brazilian production. The encounters take place on Sunday, 25th of August.

Talks and Meet the Artists are activities free of charge and took place in Cubo, new events space on JK Iguatemi 3rd floor. Subject to availability, the panels counted with a live broadcast, in partnership with Portal Terra.

Image and photography in the digital age

Mediated by Miguel Del Castillo, New Museum curator Margot Norton and architect Guilherme Wisnik discussed about the impact of digital contemporaneity on images, and the consequent social unfolding of this trend.

Will success spoil photography?

The integration of photography to the same market as painting and sculpture altered our perception of the dual nature of photography as both object and image. What do these changes entail for the photographic future? Curator Barbara Tannenbaum, from Cleveland Museum of Arts, and gallerist Mario Cohen pondered upon this question.

Olho no Olho [Eye to Eye] – Photography & Literature
SP-Foto & Escrevedeira Partnership

Photographer Cristiano Mascaro confided to writer and literary critic Noemi Jaffe his conception of the role of the photographer as a sort of life chronicler. Starting from this idea, Mascaro talked about his intimate relation with literature and to what extent certain books by fundamental names of this universe, such as Clarice Lispector, Ernesto Sabato, Italo Calvino and the critic Antonio Candido, have been source of inspiration throughout the long path of his photographic production. This panel was part of a cycle of panels on photography and literature, conceived in partnership with Escrevedeira.

Photography and contemporary art in conversation

In a dialogue with journalist and researcher Ronaldo Entler, Julieta González, from Museo Jumex (Mexico), analysed how contemporary artists, such as Christopher Williams, Rosangela Rennó and Wolfgang Tillmans, adopt photography in order to build their work. Mediation by Miguel Del Castillo.

Meet the Artists: Mauro Restiffe

In occasion of the first exhibition of the “Alvorada” series, featuring color photographs, Mauro Restiffe discussed with the public about his creative processes. The photographer holds works in important public collections, such as Inhotim, MAM-SP and Tate Gallery, among others.

Meet the Artists: Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca

The artists duo, sided by Pedro Sotero, responsible for the direction of photography of the videos, went on stage to reveal the backstage of their production. With work deeply rooted in the exploration of different music genres and with their own rich aesthetics, Wagner and de Burca have represented Brazil in important international exhibitions, such as Skulptur Projekte Münster (2017) and the 58th Venice Biennale (2019).
