As part of its 15th anniversary celebrations, SP-Arte announces the debut of a new curated sector in the next edition of the Festival, which will take place from the 3rd to the 7th of April at the Bienal Pavilion. The sector OpenSpace breaks with the traditional booth format and takes artworks outside the Pavilion to the Ibirapuera Park.
Curated by Cauê Alves, director of the MuBE (the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture and Ecology), the sector functions as an artworks park, inviting the Festival’s visitors to explore the exterior of Oscar Niemeyer’s building. In the ‘Praça das Bandeiras’, one of the main points of entry to the Pavilion, other pieces make the connection between what is exhibited outside and the universe of artworks inside the Fair.
Sculptures and installations from renowned national and international artists compose a diversified selection that transits through time periods, materials and discussions about the medium. Cauê Alves, the sector’s curator, comments that, “We have selected a range of artwork, from historical pieces by Hélio Oticica, who, in the 1970s, worked with the idea of space and environment in art through his ‘Penetrables’ series, to an original sculpture by the Argentinian artist Eduardo Navarro, who, today, is one the main authorities on the sculpture field.”
“Beyond promoting an important dialogue between the event and the natural environment that surrounds the Pavilion, the debut of this new sector reinforces our pursuit for diversification in SP-Arte, which has become a key meeting point between the many parties that participate in the April arts programme,” affirms Fernanda Feitosa, SP-Arte’s director.
