Exhibitors' list: Rotas Brasileiras 2023

Built on the success of SP–Arte, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2024, the second edition of SP–Arte Rotas Brasileiras takes place from August 30th to September 3rd at ARCA in São Paulo. With 70 participating galleries (see the list below), the event is dedicated to Brazilian galleries presenting specially curated projects.
The fair celebrates Brazilian art from the past, present, and future, embracing local and global perspectives, rooted in tradition yet dynamic. It encompasses Brazilian customs and cultures that continually acquire new and lasting meanings, moving towards diversity.
Well-established art galleries such as Almeida & Dale, Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, Gomide&Co, Millan, and Vermelho participate alongside prominent younger galleries like HOA, Central, VERVE and Sé, as well as those located outside the Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo axis, such as Cerrado (Goiânia), Lima (São Luís do Maranhão), Marco Zero (Recife), Mitre (Belo Horizonte), and Paulo Darzé (Salvador).
Diversity will be highlighted in the selection of artists and artworks showcased, such as Ayrson Heráclito (Paulo Darzé), selected for the 35th Bienal of São Paulo, an artist that incorporates elements of Afro-Brazilian culture in his works; Erika Verzutti (Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel) and her exploring of new paths in sculpture; Heitor dos Prazeres (Almeida & Dale), who portrayed samba, carnival, and life in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro; Jaider Esbell (Millan) and his indigenous cosmology, among so many others.
SP–Arte Rotas Brasileiras‘ program also includes special invited projects with multiple performances. This is the case of Sertão Negro (GO), a space for artistic residency and experience founded by the Goianian artist Dalton Paula (32nd Bienal de São Paulo and New Museum Triennial, 2018); the project Novos para Nós by Renan Quevedo brings a curation focused on different beliefs of the country; the artistic collective Igreja do Reino da Arte, from Rio de Janeiro, founded by artists such as Zé Tepedino, Edu de Barros, and Maxwell Alexandre; the project Xiloceasa, a collective of artists from the Ceagesp region formed at Ateliescola Acaia, and the GDA gallery, founded and managed by artists, which this year showcases the photographic collection “Retratistas do Morro” by João Mendes and Afonso Pimenta.
The fair also offers thematic audio guides produced by invited curators, which will be available on Spotify, guided tours, and artist conversations.
Tickets will be available for purchase starting in August through the SP–Arte app. The app is free and can be downloaded on iOS and Android versions, providing access to all the fair’s content, as well as the cultural program in the city.
During the same period as the fair, from August 30th to September 3rd, Artesol will occupy the State (in front of ARCA) with the Art of Masters. The event celebrates the 25th anniversary of the organization specialized in the implementation, management, and execution of socio-cultural development projects in traditional craft-producing communities throughout the country.
Bringing together 20 masters, groups, and families from various states, including Alagoas, Ceará, Mato Grosso, Pernambuco, and Pará, the exhibition will showcase over 200 artworks. It will provide exclusive spaces for artisans to present their works prominently and interact with the audience, as well as showcase exclusive documentaries that contextualize the social, cultural, and creative aspects surrounding the artists.
