Adrianna Eu

Brazil, 1972

About

Adrianna Rabello Pereira Rodrigues Alves was born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1972, where she lives and works. She studied at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (EAV-RJ), where she took lessons from Malu Fatorelli between 2003 and 2006 and also took Filosophy classes with Professor Auterives Maciel, at Museu da República between 2003 and 2007. Since 2010 she is a member of Grupo Alice de Estudos e Projetos, coordinated by Brígida Baltar and Pedro Varela.
As a pseudonym, she adopted “Adrianna eu” (name that would represent her), thinking of it as a work-name. Having as one of her themes the relationships between people and their own identities, she was taken by a desire of having inside her name a “provocation”, which she already considers her first work. Adrianna eu is a work-name that intents to provoke in the other a feeling of reflection. With the intent of creating unfamiliarity and questioning the limits of the self, to every place the artist goes, the pronoun “I” (“eu”, in Portuguese), not being a surname, is translated to the local language, making it possible for the process of unfamiliarity to be built.
In 2005, after watching the play “Destruição e reconstrução do pai [Destruction and reconstruction of the father]” by Denise Stoklos, about the life of the sculptor Louise Bourgeois at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil – Rio de Janeiro, encouraged and helped by Denise, Adrianna went to meet the artist at her house in New York to show her her work. Invited by Bourgeois, she came back once more. In 2006, she won the First Prize at Arte Pará Salon. Adrianna eu likes to think that her trajectory is traced by desire.
